Are you shouting into the void?

The internet and all that comes with it can be brilliant for reaching people. It’s cheap, can be targeted and reaches thousands of people in one hit.

But, particularly when time and/or budget is tight, it can lead to time and money being wasted. Just because you can reach a wide audience doesn’t always mean you should.

This may seem like an odd thing for a marketer to say but think about it differently. If you were sending 1000 letters to people who receive 5-10 letters a day you may get some response. Today you are sending those 1000 letters to people who are receiving hundreds of letters daily from other people, including your competitors.

Digital Marketing is similar in that you are displaying messages to people who are viewing content from hundreds if not thousands of others every day.

So do you;

1. try to stand out by being more creative with your content?

2. dedicate time to really think about who it is you are trying to reach?

Hint: You may choose to do 1 but always start with 2.

If your digital marketing isn’t starting conversations, increasing awareness or delivering leads then it is likely you are joining thousands of others who are shouting into the void and your time and effort is actually best spent elsewhere.
